Brocton 1 Boldmere St Michaels 5

Brocton made four changes from the side that lost 5-1 at West Didsbury & Chorlton last weekend. There were starts for Tony Allsopp, Kieran Nelson, Josh Small and Cameron Osborne. Boldmere St Michaels came into the game top of the Midlands Football League following an unbeaten start to the campaign.

The Mikes sent an early waring signal to Brocton when Isaac Phillips forced Allsopp into a good save in just the 2nd minute. In the 9th minute, Robbie Thompson-Brown was tripped outside the box by Adam Weldon. Thompson-Brown took the free-kick himself, but the wall did its’s job and the ball was cleared. Reece Leek was next to test Allsopp, but his free-kick was comfortably held by the Brocton keeper. In the 16th minute, Brocton had their first attack. Dean Williams found space on the right, but his cross was too deep and drifted harmlessly wide. Danny O’Sullivan created an opportunity by cutting inside but his shot was off target. In the 22nd minute, Boldmere were screaming for a penalty as James Bowen went down in the area. With complaints still ringing around the ground, a fine run by Osborne was thwarted with a superb last ditch challenge from Alex Worley. Williams volleyed over the bar from a decent position. The two Boldmere full-backs were causing problems down the flanks, and a Ben George overlap was well saved by Allsopp. Brocton had a great chance to take the lead in the 32nd minute. A superb cross from Weldon was headed just wide by Cam Jackson. The visitors could have taken the lead in the 37th minute. A cross from O’Sullivan was marginally too far in front of Phillips. When the ball was played back into the area. Leek blasted high over the bar when he should have hit the target. As the half drew to a close, Boldmere continued to press. A cross from Thompson-Brown saw Leek attempt an audacious overhead but he failed to get a decent connection. On the stroke of half-time, Boldmere were awarded a penalty when Phillips was checked by Nelson just inside the area. O’Sullivan stepped up and despatched the penalty with ease.

Half-time: Brocton 0 Boldmere St Michaels 1

The first chance of the half fell to Brocton with Osborne’s cross inches away from being converted by Jackson. At the other end, Allsopp comfortably saved O’Sullivan’s shot. Boldmere went close to extending their lead in the 62nd minute. A cross from Leek was met at the far post by George and his header was inches wide. Malaki Norford beat two defenders and his cross was cleared for a corner. Williams’ dead ball delivery was good with Nelson wide with the header. Boldmere made it 2-0 in the 67th minute. Small was caught in possession leaving O’Sullivan free and he slid the ball into the corner. Four minutes later and it was 3-0. Boldmere sub Alex McSkeane was pulled back in the penalty area and a penalty was awarded much to the dismay of the Brocton defenders. O’Sullivan stepped up and despite a brilliant effort by Allsopp, the ball ended in the net. Williams was sent to the sin bin for his continued protests at the decision. McSkeane added salt to the wound by adding Boldmere’s 4th in the 73rd minute. He beat Nelson and drove a fierce shot past the despairing Allsopp. Kyle Byrne went close for Boldmere curling a cross over Allsopp but just past the post. Brocton reduced the deficit on 85 minutes with a screamer from Adam Weldon, picking his spot from distance and giving Dan Crane no chance. In the 90th minute, an excellent run by Byrne at the heart of the Brocton defence created space for Ashanti Pryce but he ballooned his shot over the bar. A minute into time added on, a cross from the right was bundled home by McSkeane under pressure from Nelson to give Boldmere a flattering 5-1 scoreline.
