Seven up for the Badgers

Saturday 5th October

Midland Football League Premier Division

Brocton 7 Wolverhampton Casuals 0

Brocton made one change from the side that lost in midweek at Stone Old Alleynians; Lucas Green-Birch came into the starting line up in place of skipper Connor Haddaway. Wolves Casuals had made a poor start to the campaign but last weekend they became the first side to take points off 1874 Northwich.

The match could not have started better for Brocton as they took the lead after 50 seconds. Green-Birch threaded the ball through to Reg Smith and he beat Lucas Kibrya with a shot into the corner. In the 4th minute, Christian Blanchette hit the target with Kibrya making the save. It was all Brocton at the start of the game and Green-Birch waltzed through the Cassies defence only to be blocked as he attempted to shoot. Brocton doubled the lead in the 8th minute. Excellent approach play created a chance for Green-Birch. He slid his shot goalwards, and the ball ended in the net despite a last ditch attempt to clear from Jono Millinchip. Two goals to the good inside ten minutes and things looked ominous for the visitors. The third Brocton goal followed in the 17th minute. Again, excellent approach play created an opening for Will Whieldon and he volleyed past Kibrya. In the 22nd minute, Brocton opened up the Cassies defence again and Blanchette cleared the bar with his effort. Josh Simcox drove forward from full back only to be thwarted by a fine tackle from Ben Wheaver. Brocton kept up the pressure. Whieldon went close to a second when his snap shot was inches wide. On a rare foray forward, Cassies wasted a free kick with Reece Taylor overhitting the ball and it floated over the goal line. In the 33rd minute, Smith shot on the turn and Kibrya made a fine save. Smith sent Blanchette clear, he laid the ball into the path of the onrushing Whieldon who couldn’t keep his shot down. In the 36th minute, a Whieldon free kick found Ben Haddaway at the far post and his header was saved low down by Kibrya. Charlie King then set up Whieldon for another effort which cleared the bar. In the 41st minute, Charlie King laid the ball into the path of Whieldon and his shot beat Kibrya but hit the outside of the post. Cassies first attempt of the game came two minutes before the break when Taylor forced a comfortable save from Tony Allsopp. A minute later, Whieldon forced a save from the overworked Kibrya.

Brocton began the second half on the front foot as they had been all game. Two minutes after the break, Blanchette played the ball into Smith and his shot was just wide. A minute later, Whieldon played the ball to Smith, and he forced another save from Kibrya. Brocton got their fourth in the 49th minute. Whieldon shot low from inside the area and the ball went under the body of Kibrya. Four minutes later and it was five. A superb through ball picked out Alex Curtis on the right. He cut inside and curled a left footed shot into the corner. Brocton’s sixth goal came in the 57th minute. Smith intercepted a ball destined for Kibrya, rounded the keeper, and tapped home from a tight angle. A minute later, Smith wriggled free of the defenders and shot inches wide of the post. The chances kept coming. A long clearance from Allsopp was controlled by Smith, and Kibrya made a fine save with Smith in front of goal. A good run from Simcox, across the edge of the area, created an opening and his shot was just over. In the 66th minute, Jude King forced another save from Kibrya. Some of the football Brocton were producing, was of the highest level. From one superb move, Whieldon’s volley was just over the bar. Curtis flashed a volley wide as Brocton searched for a seventh. A strong run from Cassies substitute, Urio Hijambazapo forced an opening for Taylor, and he forced a stunning save from Allsopp to preserve the Brocton clean sheet. In the 84th minute, Toby Smith picked up the ball on the right and he produced another decent save from Kibrya. In the 87th minute, Toby Smith played into Reg Smith and his ball across goal was just in front of Jude King. A minute later, the Smith brothers combined for Brocton’s seventh and final goal. A strong run from Toby beat the defender and his ball inside was tapped home by Reg for yet another hat-trick.
